Joel Martin Hartstone – Entrepreneur-in-Residence
Joel has been a Managing Director of StoneGate Capital Group for over 30 years. In that role, he has engineered billions of dollars of M&A, restructuring, and financing transactions. His consulting specialties are: start-ups, ramp-ups, and roll-ups of new companies and/or operations; transactional and project structuring, planning and negotiation; overall senior management consulting and coaching; short-term tactical, long-term strategic and exit planning; and business reorganizations, financial restructurings, and crisis management.
Over the same period, Joel has been an active principal and/or CEO of various companies, including radio broadcasting companies owning/operating 50 stations in 20 markets, other media companies and various non-media companies with operations ranging from aircraft manufacturing to medical devices.
Prior to his investment banking and business careers, Joel was managing partner of a Hartford law firm serving institutional clients in highly sophisticated financial transactions and investment recovery. The firm is now the Hartford office of Bingham McCutchen. Before turning to private practice, Joel was the Chief Investment Lawyer for Aetna Life & Casualty, then the world’s largest diversified financial institution. While practicing law, Joel was a Founding Trustee and first Secretary/Treasurer of the American College of Investment Counsel (www.aciclaw.org) and program chairman for several business and financial law programs for the American Law Institute-American Bar Association continuing legal education program.
From 2010 – 2 013, Joel has served as an Adjunct Instructor; Judge - Transactional Lawyering Competition at Cornell Law School. Following 20 years of service as an active member, Joel is now an emeritus member of the Cornell Law School Advisory Council.
Joel is also the Author/Creator of the StoneGate Capital Group One Day MBA Program, a business boot camp for private company managers and their professional advisors; the author of The Way - Management Koans in Haiku-Like Verse (www.buytheway.biz); a trained professional mediator; and, a Justice of the Peace. He is a graduate of the Isenberg School of Management - UMass at Amherst and Cornell Law School. Hartstone is admitted to practice in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
